10 Worst WWE SummerSlam PPVs Ever

4. 2006

Out of the ’90s and into the noughties now, as we move on to one of the more recent entries on this list—but one that featured a fair few stars that might have looked more at home in the previous decade.

Ric Flair took on Mick Foley in an absolutely barbaric “I Quit” match. Which was an admirable showing from both men, but was all that ultra-violence really necessary?

And we also saw Randy Orton take on a returning Hulk Hogan, in what would be the Hulkster's final WWE bout to date. But by this point, at 53 he was just too old to put on a decent showing, and the contest wasn’t quite the affair you’d have hoped for.

Plus, the show was fairly riddled with shenanigans. Both World Title matches ended with interferences from accompanying partners, Sharmell forcing a disappointing disqualification as Batista challenged Booker T, while Lita then had a helping hand in Edge’s defence against John Cena.

But the mother of all shenanigans came in the D-Generation X vs. Vince and Shane McMahon bout, as the Spirit Squad, Mr. Kennedy, Finlay, William Regal, and finally the Big Show each helped soften up DX ahead of the actual match-up. Though we got a proper contest in the end, it was all a little too convoluted in my eyes, and contributed to a rather sub-standard SummerSlam.
