Now, I’m not necessarily saying that Ryback should never have had a WWE Title shot, but his first run for the gold arrived far too soon, when he challenged CM Punk at Hell in a Cell 2012 just six months after debuting his character.

Adding to that, a significant chunk of those six months had been spent tearing through “local athletes” in record time, which had hardly been adding to his credibility.

By the time his title shot rolled around, his biggest scalps had been those of the Miz and Dolph Ziggler. That suggests to me that they should have spent a little more time giving Ryback some major victories, rather than feeding him unknown jobbers.

This just felt like another of the WWE’s “forced pushes” as opposed to a natural, organic rise through the ranks even if he did have a little bit of momentum.

Later in 2013 when he mounted another title challenge, this time against John Cena, he seemed a far more credible and believable threat. That being said, he still wasn’t able to take home the gold...
