Compared to many other match types, the Battle Royal is a tough one to pull off successfully. Generally, fans just sit around on their hands, waiting for all the numbers to be whittled down. Only then does some excitement usually start, when the match gets down to the last two or three wrestlers.

By May 2014, Dean Ambrose (then a member of The Shield) had held the WWE United States Title for close to a full year. That lengthy title reign was unceremoniously ended in random fashion during a 20-man Battle Royal on the 5 May 2014 edition of Monday Night Raw.

Sheamus was the one chosen to win, beginning his second tenure with the secondary strap. He did eliminate Ambrose to pick up the victory, but this was a poor way for Dean's long possession of the title to be ended.

Instead of building an impactful feud between Ambrose and someone like Sheamus, WWE decided to just have the Irishman win the lottery-style bout and take the title with it.
