As mentioned earlier in a previous entry, Jack Swagger has been placed in some hellish situations as pertains to the WWE United States Title. His first reign with the gold began in earnest on 16 January 2012 when he emerged victorious over Zack Ryder in a throwaway television match on Raw.

This may have been fine had the writing team been willing to get behind Swagger and turn his innocuous win into something memorable, but that wasn't going to happen. Mere months later, Swagger was staring at the lights for comedy act Santino Marella on another episode of WWE's flagship program.

After 49 days on the championship throne, Jack Swagger was just another meaningless title switch in the end. Winning with a simple roll up, Marella even looked surprised that he'd won the belt.

Shockingly (or perhaps not so much), Santino proceeded to do very little with the United States Title himself, before then dropping it to Antonio Cesaro come SummerSlam 2012. By this point in the title's lineage, fans had realised that few title switches really meant anything. That hurt the match between Swagger and Santino.
