“Fake” anything in professional wrestling is almost never a good thing. Fake Sting was fun for a bit, but Fake Diesel, Fake Razor Ramon, Fake Kane and Fake Undertaker were all various levels of bad. The sham Undertaker, though, was the only one to find himself in a pay-per-view main event.

SummerSlam 1994 had a brilliant Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart cage match that clearly should have closed out the night. However, it was Taker vs. Taker that sent the fans home on a down note. Many of them were probably crying as they left the arena. The imposter was played by Brian Lee, who was a veteran of Smoky Mountain Wrestling at that point. He suddenly found himself in a major storyline when he signed on with the WWF. Due to his passing resemblance to Undertaker (though he was three inches shorter, and not as muscular) he was asked to dress up like the superstar. In the days of non-high definition televisions, some fans even bought into it for a little bit.

Now, Lee isn’t a terrible worker. He was pretty good years later in the Disciples of the New Church in TNA, but his WWF run was doomed. Taker in that era wasn’t the wrestler he later grew into, with a wide variety of offensive moves at his disposal. So having two guys sleepwalk their way through a match while chopping at each other’s throats for 90% of their offense was at least one guy too many.

While the two struck up a friendship in real life, it wasn’t enough to help Lee get over, and it wasn’t enough to keep him on the roster.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
