10 Wrestlers The Fans Turned On
7. Edge
There was a time in wrestling where Edge wasn’t that interesting. Despite his recent ill-judged heel turn and Judgment Day venture, Edge still had people talking. Even if the content was crap, and the whole Judgment Day thing is crap, the Rated R Superstar was still engaging.
Not so much in 2004.
A serious neck injury in early 2003 curtailed his push to the top during the famous ‘Smackdown Six’ era, and when Edge returned to Monday Night Raw in 2004, fans had high hopes he would pick up where he left off.
Except, he really didn’t. Always solid in the ring, Edge just lacked any sort of character as he tried to transition from chilled surfer guy into a gritty, no-nonsense badass. The fans didn’t latch onto it, and when he began going over young up-and -comers like Randy Orton and Shelton Benjamin, the crowd made their feelings known.
Shockingly, this culminated in Edge, who was a babyface at the time, being booed in his hometown of Toronto at SummerSlam 2004. Eventually, it led to a much welcomed heel turn later that year, and once the whole Matt Hardy incident sparked into life the following year, Edge was a made man as a vile heel.
Nowadays, Edge generates some of the biggest pops of the night. Back in 2004, the fans just wanted him to go away.
