10 Wrestlers Who Actually Asked To Drop The Title!
2. Shawn Michaels – WWF European Championship
Shawn Michaels nearly caused a riot at ‘One Night Only’ in 1997 when he beat The British Bulldog for the WWF European Championship in the main event. Fans were surprised as Davey Boy Smith to lose to HBK, given it was Bulldog’s home country where he was beloved.
When Shawn won the WWF Championship later that year at Survivor Series in the infamous Montreal Screwjob, he was now a double champion. Needing to get the European title off him, ideas were floated around backstage as to how they would without ruining Shawn’s credibility as WWF Champion. Shawn advocated to lose to his D-Generation X and Kliq buddy Triple H in a mockery of a match. So an angle was booked where WWF Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter after getting sick and tired of DX’s antics booked Shawn to defend the European title against Triple H.
When it came time to compete in the match, Triple H ran the ropes as Shawn purposely laid down and HHH ended up pinning him in one minute. HBK hilariously pretended to well-up after the match, being consoled by Chyna. It was the original ‘Fingerpoke of Doom’, except this incident was entertaining and didn’t accelerate the death of WCW.
