Eddie Guerrero finally winning the big one at No Way Out 2004, after years of sacrifice and hard work and spilling blood, sweat and tears, was a monumental sight for fans. The WWE Championship around Eddie’s waist was well and truly deserved.

Brock Lesnar shockingly quit the WWE in March 2004 with little notice, leaving the SmackDown brand without a lead heel at the time. WWE tried to fix this by turning long-term tag team competitor Bradshaw into a main eventer with his brash Wall Street cowboy JBL gimmick. Trying to establish JBL to the audience as a headline Superstar was a major undertaking. Eddie offered to lose the title to him four months into his reign to help JBL get over with the audience.

Eddie was emotionally worn out as champ too, no longer wanting the stress from leading an entire brand whose TV ratings and house show attendance were dwindling. So at The Great American Bash JBL shockingly beat Eddie in a Texas Bullrope match to win the WWE Championship.

JBL said on the After the Bell podcast regarding how Eddie helped make him:

“Without Eddie, there’s no JBL. Period. JBL was a one-and-done. That was it, and Eddie wanted to prove he could make anybody.”
