In the renowned WrestleMania 3 classic, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat reversed Randy Savage’s scoop slam into a small package to become WWF Intercontinental Champion. The WWF had hopes of Steamboat being a long-term champion but only a few months into his reign Steamboat went to WWF chairman Vince McMahon and asked to lose the title and take some time off touring/performing as his wife was expecting the birth of their first son and to recover from some nagging injuries. Vince wasn’t overly pleased at being blindsided with this request.

So on the June 13th episode of Superstars Steamboat was booked to drop the title to Butch Reed but Butch unexpectedly no-showed. Scrambling to find a replacement for him, Vince took up Hulk Hogan’s suggestion of The Honky Tonk Man which annoyed Ricky that he had to lose the second most prestigious title in the company to an Elvis impersonator.

It was because Ricky asked to lose the title and take some time away that the WWF never pushed him the same way again as when they did at WrestleMania 3 when he returned to the company for that year’s Survivor Series. So much so he left for WCW after WrestleMania 4.
