10 Wrestlers Who Actually Asked To Drop The Title!

6. Tommy Dreamer - ECW World Heavyweight Championship

‘The innovator of violence’ Tommy Dreamer was the forever underdog in the hardcore haven that was ECW. He spoke openly of wanting to go his whole career without ever winning the ECW World Heavyweight Championship (or any ECW title for that matter until Paul Heyman convinced him otherwise with 3 ECW World Tag Team Championship reigns for storylines). Dreamer believed him winning the title wouldn’t sit right with his character. He envisioned himself always as the runner-up, never the champ. Someone who would consistently come so close to winning the big one without ever managing.

But at CyberSlam 2000 Dreamer reluctantly won the World title from Taz. He agreed to it only under the condition he would immediately lose it. Tommy said on The Rise and Fall of ECW documentary regarding it:

“I was actually p****d off. I wanted to go my entire ECW career without winning titles. The only reason I won titles is because guys left.”

So the same night he won the title he lost it too in an impromptu match with Justin Credible. In hindsight Dreamer finally winning the strap only to be screwed out of it the same night was very fitting to his underdog character.
