10 Wrestlers Who Could Retire John Cena In 2022

9. Pete Dunne

Of all the Black and Gold top stars, Pete Dunne looks the best poised as NXT 2.0 takes over. At only 28, the future is bright for the Midlands grappler, and he’s well worthy of main roster elevation sooner rather than later. WWE have screwed up NXT talent before, but if they avoided the usual pitfalls, the sky’s the limit for Dunne.

What better demonstration of belief in the guy than matching him with John Cena for the veteran’s final turn in sports entertainment? Dunne’s promo game is underrated; he’s not flashy but he’s absolutely believable on the mic with a distinct, blunt approach that matches his ring work.

Their contrasting wrestling styles would make this a doozy, with Dunne about as un-Cena as it gets. His modus operandi is to injure and incapacitate, manipulating joints and breaking bones. It’s a nasty, gritty approach a world away from Cena’s arsenal of great big moves, and John’s always best against a contrasting opponent.

It seems a fanciful one, this, but Dunne needs to be given the star treatment, and it doesn’t get much starrier than this.
