CM Punk is a beloved icon in the world of professional wrestling, the “internet indie darling” who stormed the big league and changed the face of WWE forever. From his 2006 ECW debut to his retirement in 2014, Punk had a variety of successful gimmicks, with the Straight Edge Society cult leader, the Voice of the Voiceless, and the Best in the World, being standout triumphs.

It is no secret that Punk had much friction and dispute navigating the often-precarious world of professional wrestling politics. However, for a long time his popularity with the fan base provided him with protection. He had a series of feuds which also produced great matches with talent such as Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho, and John Cena.

When discussing the industry’s best talkers and promos, Punk and the pipebomb inevitably hover at the top of most lists. The Summer of Punk is one of the most memorable storylines in recent memory. However, it was mired by what would be crushing booking to most talent. Punk’s anti-authority persona turned the tide on the mic, though, tearing down Triple H and Vince McMahon with withering put-downs, even when the in-ring action was lacking.
