10 Wrestlers Who Could Talk You Into ANY Storyline
7. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Stone Cold Steve Austin is a legend to his contemporaries, wrestling fans, and anybody holding WWE stock during the late ‘90s. He was the face of the company during its storied Attitude Era, with PPV buy-rates and TV viewership at an all time high. Austin’s ability on the mic was undoubtedly a key factor in his ascent to icon.
Austin built momentum in WCW before being unceremoniously fired by Eric Bischoff. However, mere days later another of wrestling’s great minds Paul Heyman gave Austin a mic and ECW screen time to vent on his former company. It is said that this promo put Austin on Vince McMahon’s radar.
The second promo, which catapulted Austin to superstar status, was his King of the Ring 1996 “Austin 3:16” promo, an off-the-cuff diatribe mocking the born-again Christian persona of Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
Austin’s skills to carry a dud storyline were never more evident than during the Invasion, though. Many an article has been written deriding this rushed dream storyline. However, Austin was a shining beacon of entertainment. He carried the Alliance despite being best known as a WWE superstar, with humorous, off-the-wall antics, as well as making Booker T a legitimate cross-over star.
