Captain Charisma was the number one t-shirt seller in WWE at one point in 2005. To cash in on his popularity, WWE took away his RAW main event prospects and dumped him in the SmackDown undercard. Beyond frustrated with his ever-lowering ceiling in the company, Christian jumped ship to TNA where he was awarded a surname.

The Instant Classic received a mega push right out of the gate, quickly defeating Jeff Jarrett for the NWA title. While TNA's heavy emphasis on former WWE talents was typically cause for eye-rolls, Cage's back breaking efforts on top quickly won over fans and peers alike. His exceptional babyface work was topped only by the heel run that followed. Giving old pal Edge a run for his money in the detestable villain category, Cage's second run with the world title remains one of the best in company history 14 years on.

Having proven himself to be a main event level star, Cage returned to WWE, sacrificing his surname in the hopes of reaching the pinnacle there also. While a grudge feud with Jeff Hardy was initially on the cards, internet spoilers led to him making an anaemic debut on ECW instead.

Christian was never presented as a first class act in WWE, with both of his world title runs in 2011 booked to give him zero credibility. Given the general disappointment of WWE's treatment of him, it's hardly surprising he jumped ship to AEW this year.
