10 Wrestlers Who Didn't Take Their Gimmicks Seriously Enough
3. Oz
There are examples of wrestlers being miscast, and then there is Kevin Nash being packaged as Oz (as in The Wizard Of) and instructed to walk down the entrance ramp in a bright green cape and fake white beard.
Whoever came up with this idea clearly made a colossal miscalculation. While wrestling fans are probably a little harsh on Nash in general, he wasn't exactly versatile. He had one note: the laid-back wise-cracker - and he certainly wasn't capable of playing an eccentric.
That said, he's not totally blameless in all of this. Even if you're given a dead-end gimmick, you're still obliged to try and make it convincing. Instead, any attempts to come across as other-worldly were dropped the second the cape was: he was essentially just a bog-standard big guy with a weird cosplay fetish.
Not that it really affected him any in the long run. In fact, Nash's inability to make the character a success actually worked in his favour, since he was eventually sent packing to WWE, where he became one of the company's biggest stars. Lesson: don't work hard.
