10 Wrestlers Who Didn't Take Their Gimmicks Seriously Enough
2. Papa Shango
While The Godfather - Charles Wright's fifth and final WWE character - has gone down as one of the most enduring (not to be confused with most tasteful) in the company's history, the same can't be said about his first.
Given the name Papa Shango, Wright was supposed to play a voodoo practitioner capable of doing harm to his opponents without laying a finger on them. Sort of like Undertaker, but with 100% more Kizarny.
There's a reason this has gone down as one of the worst gimmicks in wrestling history, and it's not all down to the concept itself being fundamentally daft. Wright's performances just weren't convincing, making the whole thing appear less spooky and more comical.
As with Nash and Oz, though, it's probably fair to say that his failure to get his new character over was precisely what allowed him to completely reinvent himself a couple of years later and eventually become a WWE Hall of Famer.
