10 Wrestlers Who Ditched Their Terrible Ring Names

3. Sexton Hardcastle - Edge

Amassing 11 World championships between 2006 and 2011, Edge was one of the biggest stars of the recent PG era. If he hadn’t ditched his original ring name, though, that surely wouldn’t have been the case.

Prior to his days in the WWE, while on the books of the Canadian Wrestling Association, Edge went by the rather graphic moniker of Sexton Hardcastle. While that may sound like a bit of a rib, Edge actually went on to win the CWA North American Championship under that name, suggesting he was anything but a comedy character.

In fact, Edge even wrestled a couple of dark matches for the then-WWF in ’96 and ‘97 as Mr. Hardcastle himself, first at a house show against Bob Holly and then just before a taping of Sunday Night Heat versus his compatriot Glen Kulka.

The name continued to make the odd appearance here and there, but by the time he made his TV debut in the summer of ’98, the company had seemingly opted to tone things down a bit and rebranded him, simply, as Edge.

For a name to be too raunchy for even the Attitude Era, that’s really saying something.

Elliott Binks hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
