10 Wrestlers Who Found God

7. Jake Roberts

Jake "The Snake" Roberts is one of the best promo men in wrestling history and was one of the top guys during WWE's heyday in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Without Jake Roberts there's no Austin 3:16 phenomenon. It's something people may not think about right away, but it's the truth. When WWE had him out there doing that religious gimmick in 1996 he wasn't free of drugs and alcohol. Far from it. His problems became well known in the wrestling industry while fans laughed at him for being a drunk. It was sad to see a fallen hero fall so far. The 1999 film Beyond The Mat also documented his problems for the world to see. Roberts finally overcame his demons a few years ago thanks to the help of his friend Diamond Dallas Page and his yoga program. He also was welcomed back into the WWE family as part of the Hall of Fame in 2014. Roberts credits his faith for helping him get back on the right track: "I have got my connection with God, man. We are pretty tight, brother. I changed my name to 'GAT' here awhile back €” that€™s God Amusement Toy €” because God has always been there for me especially when I didn€™t know it, and I am not too proud to stick my hand out there and ask Him for help. I realized a short time ago that He is my best friend €” He is my Father. He is the Father that we all should have, and He is there for us. All we got to do is reach out and He is there for us. Find comfort in your faith. I have beaten cancer. I still got a few health issues that we are dealing with, a few spots on my brain that they are concerned about, but I know with God and doing the proper things and taking care of myself, I am going to be around a long time to aggravate a lot of people." It's been a great comeback story for Roberts. Here's hoping the man that entertained so many of us lives a healthy, happy life for the rest of his years.
