Real Reason WWE Stripped Oba Femi's Title Shot (WWE News)

Why Oba Femi is facing Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam rather than going after a World Title.

With Oba Femi earning himself a WWE World Title shot at SummerSlam after becoming the 2026 King of the Ring at Night of Champions last weekend, the Ruler has made the big decision that his SummerSlam opponent will be... Brock Lesnar?

Yes, as we saw on this week's Raw, Oba has opted to pick things back up with Brock Lesnar rather than face either World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns or new WWE Champion Sami Zayn. That Raw segment started with Brock praising Femi for his King of the Ring win, and mentioned that, while he doesn't watch the WWE product, he's been made aware by Paul Heyman of the verbal jabs Oba has taken towards Lesnar in recent weeks, before Brock kicked Femi low.

After Oba Femi recovered from that low blow, he called Brock Lesnar a "b**ch" and threw down the challenge for SummerSlam, to which Brock not only accepted that challenge but announced that it would be a Hell in a Cell match. Raw General Manager Adam Pearce would make Lesnar vs. Femi III official for SummerSlam later that night, whilst the ending of Raw set up Seth Rollins as the person to face Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at the Biggest Party of the Summer.

While Oba Femi is essentially putting his guaranteed World Title shot on hold rather than outright discarding it, that still had many fans questioning the whole point of having Oba win the King of the Ring, earn the big SummerSlam title match, only to take a pass on that and bring his focus back to Brock Lesnar.

On that topic, the latest Wrestling Observer Radio had Dave Meltzer say that WWE has decided to take their time with Oba Femi and build to his crowning moment at WrestleMania 43 rather than at SummerSlam. Meltzer explained that the WWE mentality these days is that, if Oba is the guy, the company wants to build him up slowly as a monster, leading to a crowning 'Mania Moment. In fact, Dave said that SummerSlam isn't viewed as a "strong enough" event these days for such a crowning moment to take place, calling it a "B pay-per-view" and that those big moments "have to" be done at WrestleMania.

So, if that's true, does Oba Femi hold off on cashing in his guaranteed World Title shot all the way until WrestleMania 43? Does he cash it in before then but lose, then get another title shot at 'Mania? I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things play out for the powerhouse over these next few months. Either way, up next for Oba, with them tied at 1-1 after their meetings at WrestleMania 42 and Clash in Italy earlier this year, it's a third match with Brock Lesnar when SummerSlam rolls around on the weekend of August 1st and 2nd.
