In February 1998, Bill Goldberg was making waves for himself by dominating his opponents in squash matches with a huge intensity rarely seen in wrestling beforehand. Wrestlers who were chosen to be slaughtered by Goldberg got very little offence in their matches with him.

William Regal was tasked with putting over Goldberg as part of this winning streak in WCW. Regal explained in his autobiography that WCW agents told him to go out and have a competitive match with Goldberg, hoping to instil some in-ring knowledge and guidance on the rookie Goldberg. They specifically told Regal to work a six-minute match with him, with Goldberg rarely going over a 2-minute match at that point.

Goldberg would later accuse Regal of stiffing him throughout and not selling for him as asked. Regal disputes this, writing in his autobiography, “I got into the ring, did one or two moves on him, and he did nothing back. That’s how it went on. I had to keep attacking him to keep the match going. I was even telling him to do this or that and he just wasn’t doing it.”

Eric Bischoff screamed at Regal once he came back through the curtain and was quick to have Regal lose matches after this, and was a considerable reason for Regal being fired by the organization months later after already being on thin ice for his substance abuse issues getting out of hand.
