10 Wrestlers Who Got Injured At The Worst Possible Time

6. Sting

In 1989, Sting was being groomed to take over for Ric Flair as the top star in WCW. Flair was still popular, but booker Jim Herd felt that he was too old and overexposed, and that a new face of the company was appropriate. Sting won an NWA World Title shot against Four Horsemen teammate Flair as a result of winning a tournament at Starrcade, and when he refused to relinquish it, he was kicked out of the group. All of the ingredients were present to make Sting a star, but the very same night that he left the group, he suffered a torn patella. WCW had to scramble, putting the less-popular Lex Luger in the title match at WrestleWar 1990. Herd wanted Flair to lose the title to Luger, but he refused, citing the fact that he had already promised Sting the honor. Luger lost the match, damaging his own star in the process, and the entire title situation was put on ice until Sting returned in July. At The Great American Bash, he defeated Flair for the title, but it didn't have the impact it would have had had it happened when it was supposed to. Twenty-five years later, Sting suffered a neck injury during a Pay-Per-View main event with Seth Rollins, proving he still has the gift of terrible timing.
