10 Wrestlers Who Guided Other Wrestlers To Great Performances
2. Bret Hart Vs. The British Bulldog (WWE SummerSlam 1992)
It is hard to think of a more high-profile carry job than this. That isn't because one man was a complete stiff, far from it. Bret Hart may have been the best wrestler of a generation but The British Bulldog was no slouch. In fact, the musclebound man from Golborne was more capable between the ropes than most of the WWE roster at the time. The problem wasn't that Davey couldn't wrestle, it was that he couldn't really wrestle on August 29, 1992, what with him being high as a kite and all that.
All of which left Bret 'The Hitman' Hart with the unenviable task of carrying hometown hero Davey to a quality match in the main event of SummerSlam '92, in front of 80,000 screaming spectators.
This was one of the biggest shows in the history of the company, and much of its success or failure depended on the match between Bret and Bulldog. It wasn't going to rest on Nailz vs. Virgil, was it? Both Bulldog and Bret were incredibly over with the audience, and Bret had put together a fantastic match that would live long on the memory.
The only problem was that Davey had forgotten every step of the thing. Weeks of smoking crack with Jim Neidhart will do that to you.
What followed was the biggest test of Bret Hart's career and the clearest indication that he may well have been the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Bret Hart managed to carry Davey Boy Smith to arguably the greatest match in SummerSlam history. It takes a special talent to pull that off.
