10 Wrestlers Who Lost Gold In Their Hometown

3. Sasha Banks

Charlotte Women's

Hell In A Cell 2016’s main event seemed like a great idea on paper. Sasha Banks and Charlotte wouldn’t just become the first women to ever compete in the event’s titular structure, but the first to headline a WWE pay-per-view. It would be the Women’s Revolution’s crowning glory, a real milestone moment, and one of the most memorable matches of each of their careers.

While it’ll certainly go down as a milestone, the execution was far from perfect. The match was marred by a sloppy finish and a momentum-killing stretcher spot that it never really recovered from, despite the participants’ best efforts. It should have been one of their strongest matches together, but as it stands, HIAC doesn’t even break the top five Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks contests.

Not only did Sasha drop the Women’s Championship without making a single successful defence, but she did so in her hometown. Hell In A Cell was broadcast from Boston’s TD Garden, and Sasha received a great response as she rode out from backstage in a flashy black Escalade. Few saw the loss coming, and it when it did, the crowd didn’t quite know how to react. The finish was so unforeseen that Charlotte’s victory fell entirely flat, and instead of jeering Charlotte for conquering their homecoming queen, Hell In A Cell ended with widespread confusion.
