In the summer of 2020 an online feud made the news rounds between ‘The Viper’ Randy Orton and NXT favourite Tommaso Ciampa. Orton trolled on Twitter after catching highlights of NXT TakeOver: In Your House, which Ciampa competed on, by claiming and joking the NXT talent were leg slapping when kicking far too often in their matches. It’s noteworthy now given a year later WWE has banned slapping the leg/thigh when throwing kicks for their wrestlers.

Ciampa took offence to Orton’s tweet at the time as the NXT roster bust their asses on the show, so he responded with his own tweet saying how he put on Randy Orton matches for his young daughter to fall asleep to.

A newfound level of respect between the two has formed since then, with Orton revealing how Ciampa’s WWE Network documentary blackHEART following his return from injury and neck surgery made him cry, commenting:

“That man has got a little baby. Just this morning I watched his blackHEART documentary on WWE Network that followed him around after his neck surgery. I’ll admit, I welled up and got a little tear in my eye when he woke up from the neck surgery and his beautiful little daughter was sitting on his lap and he was touching her face and just happy to see her and his wife. That’s heartwarming. I would love nothing more than to see Tommaso have a long, healthy career and retire and not need to go learn a new trade or go work at the local whatever the f–k to make ends meet and put food on the table. I want to see all these guys succeed.”
