Needless to say, Alex Riley's best run in WWE came shortly following his split from The Miz when he was given the chance to headline a handful of episodes of Raw. Although his feud with the former WWE champion was well-received, his momentum came to a screeching halt that summer when he was abruptly taken off TV. He sparingly appeared on the flagship show over the next two years, but was prominently featured on NXT and "WWE Superstars."

Following Matt Striker's release from the company in June 2013, Riley was primed to be his replacement and passed with flying colors. Sitting alongside Tony Dawson and Josh Matthews during his time on the program, he did well for himself. At one point, he received praise from one of the best commentators of all-time Jim Ross, along with JBL.

However,  it wasn't until he transitioned over to NXT that his skills as a commentator began to digress.

As he became the resident heel commentator on the show, he was an annoyance and a disturbance, often ending on the losing end of arguments with the respected William Regal and Jason Albert. Thankfully, he did fans a favor by resuming his in-ring career recently on NXT and applying his craft back where it belongs: between the ropes, not behind the booth.
