Back in the 1980s, Scott Hall was considered a top young talent in the AWA. When he went to WCW, though, he was badly misused - named The Diamond Studd and paired with Diamond Dallas Page, Hall was simply another egotistical heel. After about a year, he left the company and headed to WWE.

When he met with Vince McMahon, the WWE chairman had an idea for a character that he thought would make Hall a star. Realizing that Hall's father was in the army, McMahon wanted his new hire to portray a soldier whom he envisioned as a huge babyface.

Hall told McMahon "Vince, if you want me to be G.I. Joe, I'll be the best G.I. Joe I can be," but then countered with his own idea, a Scarface rip off that would come to be known as Razor Ramon. Apparently, McMahon and Pat Patterson had never seen the film, so they thought Hall was a genius for coming up with such an inventive gimmick. Either way, though, it was a huge success.
