10 Wrestlers Who Managed To Get Themselves Out Of Terrible Ideas
2. Bret Hart (Part 2)
A series of concussions incurred in a Starrcade 1999 match with Goldberg ensured that in early 2000, Bret Hart had to end his pro wrestling career. At the time, he was the leader of the NWO and was scheduled to defend his WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sid Vicious.
Their feud was cut short, but not before a ridiculous angle. On one episode of Nitro, the NWO attacked Sid and locked him in a limousine, only for Hart to ride a monster truck over the limo.
It was silly, but ultimately harmless - however, it almost wasn't. According to Hart in his Calgary Sun column, the way the angle was initially pitched, Sid would have really been in the limo and Hart would have really been driving the monster truck. It had been barely half a year since Hart's brother Owen had been killed in an accident, and in Bret's estimation, the tragedy could have been avoided had wrestling promoters not asked a wrestler to perform as a stuntman.
Hart recognized the potential for another catastrophe, and suggested that they use a stunt driver (and that Sid not be in the limo when it was crushed). Plans were changed and things went off without a hitch.
