Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart and the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels were considered the two best and biggest Superstars signed to the World Wrestling Federation in ’97. The endless competition between the two of who was better bell-to-bell brought out a lot of ego, with them falling out and fighting for real backstage on many occasions. A big difference between the two though was Bret tried to make talent and Shawn tried to hold them down.

Bret’s spoken of how Shawn and Triple H ganged up and made Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s life hell when he first started in the WWF. Shawn saw Rock’s potential and tried to hinder it (which is a large reason why Rock rejected pitches for him to wrestle HBK in the early ‘00s).

Bret immediately saw Rock’s potential too but tried to cultivate it. On an episode of Raw Is War Bret was told to go out and beat Rocky Maivia, who was a rookie struggling to find his feet in wrestling at the time, for the Intercontinental Championship but Bret made a point of getting the finish of the match changed to a DQ, knowing it would only bury Rock if he beat him for the title. Bret and especially his brother Owen went to bat for Rock when he was first starting out, something Rock never forgot.
