As a result of the Montreal Screwjob, Davey Boy Smith jumped to WCW with Jim Neidhart and Bret Hart. The roster was already bloated with veterans taking TV time away from young talent, and there wasn’t any room nor creative direction for the British Bulldog. He and Neidhart were relegated to WCW Thunder, failing to capture the WCW Tag Team Championship.

Then the injuries began – Smith was sidelined for a month after hurting his knee in April, and then at Fall Brawl 1998, he landed awkwardly on a trapdoor underneath the ring, which nearly paralyzed him. While he was hospitalized for six months, he received a FedEx confirming that his contract had been terminated.

During the recovery process, he became addicted to morphine and painkillers, a lethal combination that ultimately contributed to a fatal heart attack in 2002.
