10 Wrestlers Who Returned Under A Mask
2. The Fabulous Moolah
So far the wrestlers on this list have used masks solely in kayfabe. Not this time, however.
In 1985, WWF Women's Champion, Wendi Richter, was scheduled to defend her title against the mysterious "Spider Lady" at Madison Square Garden. Nothing was known about The Spider Lady, apart from that she wore a black mask.
In a moment that has since been labelled "The Original Screwjob", The Spider Lady went against the script and pinned Richter for real. The referee counted to three even though Richter's shoulders were up at one and Spider Lady was declared the new champion.
Confused fans watched on as Richter angrily attacked her opponent, ripping off her mask to reveal former Women's Champion, The Fabulous Moolah, underneath.
This whole plot had been orchestrated by Vince McMahon, after Richter fell out with the WWF. Vince wanted the title back onto someone he could trust and so screwed Richter out of the belt, a tactic he would use against twelve years later in Montreal.
Richter has since made peace with the WWE and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. However, this remains one of the most underhanded things the company has ever done and is probably the most real use of a mask in wrestling as you're ever going to get.
