WWE were presented with the opportunity to not only save the ailing United States Title by installing an exciting performer the fans actually want to root for at WrestleMania, but save Rusev from midcard heel hell at the same time.

Unfortunately, they blew it.

Not only did 'The Bulgarian Brute' fail to win, but he was the one pinned by Jinder Mahal. A dismal situation for a three-dimensional performer pushed well beneath his talent level.

Rusev was reportedly added to the match on account of his surge in popularity and strong merchandise sales. If that's the case, why have him take the fall? Sure, it gave fans a reason to get invested in the bout, but what's the point if that interest spike only lasts eight minutes, 15 seconds?

The sad truth of it is that the big man may never be pushed. Rusev Day will go the way of Damien Mizdow, the Bulgarian's popularity will dissipate, and he'll remain a jobber to the stars forever. A pessimistic prognosis, but WrestleMania 34 offered no reason to feel cheery about a future that'll likely see Rusev remain stranded until the day he departs.
