10 Wrestlers Who Were Secretly The Greatest Intercontinental Champions Ever
9. Shelton Benjamin A three time Intercontinental Champion and one time United States Champion, Shelton Benjamin very nearly didnt even get that first IC Title match. Benjamin was placed in the match for Chris Jerichos title at the very last minute at Taboo Tuesday 2004. Fifteen WWE Superstars were in the running, amongst them Christian and Batista but, incredibly, Benjamin won the public vote with 37% of the public choosing him, and he would go on to hold the Intercontinental title for 244 days. Jericho was informed in the ring by referee Mike Chioda that Benjamin would be going over that evening. The pair of them had never wrestled before, but Jericho had asked all of his possible opponents about preferred sequences of moves prior to the show starting, so he had a little something to go on. The two men managed to pull off a fifteen minute classic on the fly, despite Jericho not being sure what Benjamins finish was. Benjamin credits this title victory and subsequent long reign as being the reason why he gained so much confidence as a performer. He would subsequently be considered one of the most athletic and talented men in WWEs midcard for most of the rest of the decade.
