10 Wrestlers Who Were Stuck In Midcard Purgatory

3. Shelton Benjamin

Every year Shelton Benjamin would take part in the WrestleMania Money in the Bank ladder match, and every year Shelton could be relied on to provide the most memorable moment in the match. Despite this nobody every truly believed that Shelton was going to grab the case, and every year the disbelieving was proved correct.

Shelton was always there to win secondary titles and feud with new stars, but once his initial push had faded he never truly threatened the top table. His first night as a singles competitor saw him pick up a win over Triple H, and he soon won the Intercontinental Championship to back up his ability.

The problem here is that this seemed to immediately confirm his position, as an insanely talented performer in the upper middle of the card who will have great matches with headliners on RAW, but would never really be in the conversation when it came to breakout stars.

Shelton was supposed to return to SmackDown Live earlier this year until injury ended that dream. If he is to return in 2017, will that main event role finally be his?

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
