As NXT’s dominant heel champion, Shayna Baszler was one the most compelling performers in all of WWE. Drawing on her legit MMA background and radiating a terrifying aura, her vicious offence looked legitimately painful in a way few others could match. Plus, when she popped up behind an opponent to lock in her Kirifuda Clutch finisher, “The Queen of Spades” looked like a monster rising from the deep to pull an innocent victim to their doom.

Paul Heyman saw this and decided that Baszler should bite Becky Lynch on the back of the neck, swapping UFC legitimacy for some vampire b*llocks. The segment was widely derided and before long Baszler was monstering people in the Elimination Chamber like the female Brock Lesnar NXT fans knew she could be. Liv Morgan was destroyed but got over in the moment simply for having the guts to fight back.

It proved to be a false dawn. WWE could have cemented Shayna’s stardom by putting the belt on her at WrestleMania 36. Instead, she fell to Becky Lynch, right before “The Man” disappeared on maternity leave and gave up the title anyway.

Since then Baszler has been squandered on the main roster, largely stuck in a now-defunct tag division that was clearly an afterthought outside of The Golden Role Models storyline. With “Papa H” in the driving seat, it’s time for Baszler to be built back up and made ready for the dream match with Ronda Rousey that fans have been fantasy booking for years.
