10 Wrestlers Who Will Benefit From Triple H Running WWE Creative
3. Io Shirai
Credit where it’s due. As the recent number one contender’s battle royal proved, NXT 2.0 is putting the graft into booking its women’s division. The gimmicks may be silly and the wrestlers greener than Kermit the Frog but the characters have defined traits and are given the TV time to get over and progress stories. The division is better booked than AEW’s women’s roster, despite the gulf in talent and experience.
That being said, NXT 2.0 is a world away from the women’s division Io Shirai dominated for over a year. Away for a prolonged spell due to injury, it’s hard to see how you slot “The Genius Of The Sky” back in amid the silly storylines and overt, crass sexuality. She’s way beyond “developmental” but it’s also hard to see her faring well amongst the increasingly underserved women on Raw and SmackDown.
Under Triple H’s stewardship, NXT had a deep and varied pool of female talent and at times the NXT women’s title felt like the most prestigious in the whole company. With “The Game” now calling the shots on the main roster, it surely means an upturn for the fortunes of WWE’s women and a more hospitable environment for this supremely talented badass in particular. We may yet see Io walking to a WrestleMania ring to the strains of a live performance by Poppy.
