After a loss against Aleister Black at WrestleMania 36, Lashley began a winning streak but was directionless. His salvation came in the form of MVP, who pushed him to a WWE Championship opportunity against Drew McIntyre at Backlash. Lashley lost, blaming Lana for interfering, thus putting an end to the romantic angle that was dragging Lashley down.
