It seemed pretty surreal to discover that one of WWE's most underrated and reliable names over the last decade had never been gifted with a one-on-one singles match on WrestleMania's main card.
Finally righting that egregious wrong last year, The Swiss Superman brought the entire building down with a little help from Seth Rollins as the two Ring of Honor alumni went to war inside of the squared circle for the live audiences' enjoyment. Cesaro would even pick up the emphatic victory on the night, seemingly signalling WWE's newfound faith in the perennial bridesmaid as a singles star capable of sharing a bit of the spotlight at the top of the card.
And a showdown with The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania Backlash over the Universal Championship only added to this belief that Cesaro was actually being given the respect he deserved for a change.
However, in typical WWE fashion, all that goodwill was soon squandered as Cesaro resumed his feud with The Architect, losing at Hell in a Cell and on SmackDown, before falling back into obscurity on Friday nights for the rest of the year.
Sure enough, clearly sensing Vinnie Mac had no intention of using him to his full potential in the coming years, Cesaro opted to let his deal expire and walk out of the company recently, no doubt paving the way for an exciting new chapter and the return of a certain Claudio Castagnoli...
