At WrestleMania XXVIII Daniel Bryan lost his World Heavyweight Championship to Sheamus in a match that went just eighteen seconds. WWE has tried to frame the loss as the start of the ‘Yes Movement’ in the years since then but it was clearly not designed to be the start of any sustained push for the ‘American Dragon.’

Being a defending world champion going into the biggest show of the year would have seemed like a big deal for Bryan had it not been for the way he had been booked throughout his reign. After cashing in his Money in the Bank contract, the technical genius was portrayed as a cowardly heel that just managed to hold on to his title against giants such as Big Show and Mark Henry.

A match against Sheamus at WrestleMania was a great chance for a hot opener to the show, whilst showing how gifted Daniel Bryan is under the brightest of spotlights. Alas, WWE opted for a shock finish that could have served to permanently demote Bryan to the mid-card had it not been for the overwhelming fan support he would experience over the coming years.

As for the Sheamus/Daniel Bryan rivalry, they would at least get to have an excellent Two out of Three Falls match at the following Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
