"...Vince McMahon tried to turn into a major player more than once".

That phrase could've been written for Sid Justice/Sycho Sid/Sid Vicious. His baffling decision to turn down McMahon's bid to turn him babyface (and thus attempt to run with him as, you guessed it, the next Hulk Hogan) neutered his first stint with the company in the early-90s.

A second run, between 1995-1997, saw Sid get his hands on the WWF Title. It was obvious that physical size helped there, and it was also clear that McMahon was still enamoured with the big guy's bulging, muscular frame. The problem was that Sid's matches, when not with Shawn Michaels, were rather dull.

Had Sid worked a faster pace, which he'd shown he was capable of against HBK and (to a lesser extent) Bret Hart, then things might've been different. It wasn't to be however. Sid fell flat and blatantly wasn't as interested in full-time pro wrestling as it was in him.
