10 Wrestlers WWE Tried To Push To The Top (But Failed)

3. Jack Swagger

Similar to The Miz, it's hard to believe the push that WWE gave to Jack Swagger in 2010. Swagger, another former amateur wrestling standout, seemed to tick a lot of the boxes that are required to headline in WWE but he never really made it to the next level. Swagger started his WWE career on the ECW brand and had a series of great matches with Christian in 2009. He moved to the Raw brand later in the year and focused on winning the Intercontinental Championship before being entered into the 2010 Money In The Bank ladder match at WrestleMania. Swagger won the match and shockingly cashed in his contract two days later, beating WWE World Heavweight Champion Chris Jericho (who had been flattened by Edge). Fans were shocked by the switch and Swagger's unexpected push. Sure, he was always going to get a push but nobody could have predicted it would happen so soon. What many people did predict, however, was that the push would fail and WWE would soon lose interest in the Swagger experiment. Swagger held on to the big gold belt for a couple of months before losing it to Rey Mysterio in June. He then had a very entertaining summer feud with the masked man but failed to recapture the belt. Jack Swagger will never again be placed in a top-line position by WWE. It's hard to believe but Swagger's sole Championship reign was nearly five years ago. Five years on, he is nowhere near as over as he was then. WWE tried to push him to the top but it just didn't work out. Swagger is destined to be a United States of Tag Team Championship guy for as long as he remains in the company.
