Chris Kanyon has been appreciated and looked upon in recent years as a unsung great wrestler of his time who did his best to get himself as well as his opponents over simultaneously.

When WCW was bought by the then-WWF in late March 2001, Kanyon made the jump. He achieved success early, once being a double champion by holding the WCW United States Championship and WWF Tag Team Championship (with Diamond Dallas Page) at the same time.

As the Invasion angle was dying out in late 2001 Kanyon was tasked with working with Brock Lesnar in house shows. Initially, Lesnar beat Kanyon multiple times over. But on the 20th October house show, in the last time they would lock up, Kanyon beat Lesnar clean in the middle of the ring.

They would have wrestled more, but Kanyon tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in a dark match with another future star Randy Orton shortly after working with Brock.

Kanyon, an openly gay wrestler, wasn’t the biggest fan of Lesnar. Speaking years later after Lesnar made some derogatory comments to ESPN regarding homosexuals, Kanyon said Lesnar’s “public statements vary from offensive to ridiculous to covered-up by reporters to protect him from his own stupidity.”
