3. Why Sting Vs. Undertaker Never Happened

Sting's arrival in WWE in 2014 finally seemed to have set the stage for a mouth-watering showdown with The Undertaker.

Sadly, that never came to pass, of course. Sting initially retired from in-ring action in 2016 before eventually leaving WWE to join AEW in 2020, and the Deadman called time on his career that same year.

After spending so much time in separate companies, though, WWE definitely had the chance to pull the trigger on a marquee mega match for a few years there. But, as The Icon himself would explain in the years since his last match in WWE against Seth Rollins, it seemed they - or the other half of the dream bout, at least - were never really interested in a match the rest of the world definitely wanted to see.

Sting noted in 2017 that he ran the idea past The Undertaker but didn't get the impression The Phenom was as into the match as him, and revealed that he pushed for a cinematic match against 'Taker before he left in 2020. He also openly added in 2021 that he didn't really know why this battle never happened, but wondered whether 'Taker just didn't like the idea of it.

So, was 'Taker's apparent reluctance to agree to a hopefully less traumatic super showdown the reason this match never happened?

Well, according to Mark Calaway, it was actually Vince McMahon who didn't want the match back in the mid 2010s, with the legend finally revealing this on his Six Feet Under podcast (via Cageside Seats) a decade after Sting's WWE debut. Although 'Taker did add that he didn't think the match would live up to the hype at that stage in their careers, something he also alluded to back in 2020, saying it likely looked better on paper by the time it could actually happen.

Whether you choose to believe it was the former boss who didn't fancy this one or his loyal Phenom, either way, Sting and the fans' dream of seeing these two megastars collide still disappointingly rested in peace.
