Longtime WCW fans will recall how Starrcade (which actually started before Vince McMahon's own supershow in 1983) grew to become the promotion's version of WrestleMania. The last pay-per-view each year, Starrcade was also the biggest show on the calendar. Not to Eric Bischoff, it wasn't.

On his 83 Weeks show, Bischoff said that Halloween Havoc was the one WCW executives viewed as the bigger show, especially towards the tail end of the 90s. There was one simple reason for that: the final five Havoc events emanated from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

To Bischoff, this was a golden opportunity for WCW to co-brand with the casinos and boost the organisation's profile.

From 1996 onwards, until the final Halloween Havoc pay-per-view in 2000, WCW's power players saw the October show as the most important. Starrcade may have had the greater history, but that didn't matter to Bischoff when he was trying to make the company money.
