10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (June 8)
5. Kane Blames Himself For Isaac Yankem's Failure
By his own admission, Glenn Jacobs didn't try too hard when playing the Isaac Yankem character in the mid-90s. Absolutely horrified that Vince McMahon was seriously pitching he play Jerry Lawler's evil dentist, Jacobs then couldn't get to grips with the gimmick. Who can blame him there?
Kane, that's who. To this day, Jacobs blames himself for Yankem failing to catch on with fans.
He said this on Lawler's "Dinner With The King" podcast recently, and admirably took full responsibility for the demented dental guise flopping in 1995. That seems a little self-critical. It's hardly as though the character had any potential. It was a short-lived, cartoony excuse to further the ongoing Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler feud.
Still, Kane believes WWE put their full weight behind it and he didn't meet them halfway. His comments on the podcast almost make it sound like Yankem's failure was a surprise. Anyone watching in '95 would say different. It was a real low-point for creativity.
