Long before he became a key part of the Nation Of Domination and started winning titles during the Attitude era, D'Lo Brown was just another trainee who helped set up the rings. It was Jim Cornette's Smoky Mountain Wrestling that gave Brown his first big break, and Corny believed some ring crew experience in WWE would benefit D'Lo.

At first, it was a racism-fuelled nightmare for the man.

On Cornette's podcast, D'Lo opened up to tell how one guy (in particular) on the crew would call him every racial slur under the sun. At the time, Brown didn't want to rock the boat or appear ungrateful for his opportunity, so he kept quiet. Then, a squash match loss to The Undertaker changed everything.

'Taker pulled D'Lo aside backstage and said he had real potential. That lit a fire under Brown, and it made him realise that he didn't need to be quietly appreciative. He belonged in wrestling, and he was so inspired that he stood up to the racist who had been plaguing him from day one.
