10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Nov 28)

10. The Gobbledy Gooker Was Never Supposed To Be A Wrestler

There were a lot of disappointed fans at the 1990 Survivor Series. Today, WWE discuss the event in glowing terms, because it featured the debut of The Undertaker. That wasn't the only first appearance for a new character, the infamous Gobbledy Gooker also showed up. Hatching from a giant egg, the turkey danced with 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, whilst fans booed heavily. According to the man wearing the costume, Hector Guerrero, The Gobbledy Gooker was presented shoddily. Fans were under the impression that the egg would contain a new wrestler, but the character was simply there to dance and act as a mascot. Vince McMahon wanted a costumed character which would appeal to children, but accidentally ended up irking adults in the crowd. For years, wrestling fans have wondered why the Gooker didn't actually perform inside the ring. Guerrero cleared that up during an appearance on Wrestlezone Radio. It turns out he was never contracted as a wrestler by the WWF, a company he had tried to break into several times before. The McMahon family had never been interested in him, but they did see Hector as perfect to play the mascot role.
