Dean Ambrose had been showing hints of a heel turn for weeks before he finally turned rogue by battering Seth Rollins post-match on the 22 October Raw. He'd walked out on his Shield buddies earlier in the month and WWE ran promos in which Rollins and Roman Reigns questioned Dean's attitude.

It turns out that Ambrose was originally slated to turn heel much later than he did. Roman Reigns' shocking cancer announcement on the 22 October episode changed everything, according to Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer. That forced WWE's hand and they decided to power on with the heel turn that same night.

Before Reigns' emotional statement, Ambrose was supposed to attack him instead.

The turn would've led to a WrestleMania 35 clash between Ambrose and Reigns. Once it became clear to creative that Roman was out of the picture going forward, they pivoted and put Seth in his place. The turn was rushed to move on from Reigns' tragic announcement ASAP.
