The peak of Tazz's WWE run came when he debuted with a win over Kurt Angle inside Madison Square Garden at the 2000 Royal Rumble. After that, the ex-ECW star was mired in the Hardcore Title division and started transitioning into a colour commentary position the next year.

Before that happened, Tazz tried to catch Vince McMahon's attention by moving away from what had worked for him in ECW.

Via his weekly podcast, he revealed that's why he stopped wearing the black singlet to the ring and changed it up with some sleeveless shirts and trousers. No, this wasn't a WWE call, it was a personal one from Tazz himself; believing McMahon didn't like the ECW look (because he hadn't been pushing him), Tazz thought it was high-time he tried something new.

When that didn't work either, Tazz started to realise that any hopes of a push had faded. Behind the scenes, he also started to notice little signs from the writers and other production staff that he wasn't really in WWE's plans.
