10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (Dec 9)
7. Finn Balor Misheard The Crowd At SummerSlam
It appears WWE are content to colour code their title belts rather than introduce unique designs for each new championship these days. For example, the red motif favoured by the Raw Women's Title differs to the blue one used for SmackDown's version. The same can be said for the WWE Universal Title.
Introduced at SummerSlam, the Universal strap was the source of much conversation on social media at the time. Many felt the title looked ugly next to the WWE Title, and that included people in attendance for the pay-per-view itself. Unfortunately, Finn Balor (who was wrestling Seth Rollins for the prize) misheard the live audience.
People in the stands were actually shouting, 'This Belt Sucks' over and over again. In the middle of his match, Balor's heart sank. The Irishman believed everyone was repeating, 'Balor Sucks'.
Revealing this during an interview with the Sam Roberts Wrestling podcast, Finn said he could barely even lift the belt anyway post-match due to injuries. Backstage, some thought he was ashamed of the title's look, however Balor was hurting both physically and mentally.
Just as his big babyface run was beginning, Balor thought that people had turned on him.
