There's no doubt that Shawn Michaels could have continued wrestling long past his 2010 goodbye following WrestleMania XXVI. He was still in excellent shape, had a mind better than anyone else in the biz and could've had dream matches against the likes of Daniel Bryan and others had he held on just a few years longer.

He almost did.

HBK told Sports Illustrated this week that WWE said they could insert an 'out' to his retirement angle with The Undertaker should he be hesitant about retiring. He was, and it wasn't until Shawn was sitting backstage with 'Taker and Michael Hayes after the match that he decided not to try and top what they'd achieved that night. Right then, Michaels said he was done.

24 hours later on Raw, he officially signed off and retired until returning in 2018 for a tag match in Saudi Arabia at Crown Jewel. It was Shawn's call. Had he got cold feet on walking away from wrestling, WWE would've kept him around either as a full or part-timer. They were willing to go back on their stip.
